Liberty Village Loft Home Office and bar

High-gloss laminates continue to be very popular, and this project in a loft in Toronto’s Liberty Village is a great example of using high-gloss to its strengths. We designed and installed two areas in this loft, a home office that doubles as a wardrobe, along with built-in bar and linen storage in the other room.

desk, armoire, wardrobe, library, custom cabinets

This home office installation doubles as a bedroom work station and wardrobe.

Wall to wall cabinets in a converted factory loft space, this nook in the bedroom creates a dynamic home office. The cabinet exteriors use a high-gloss melamine called Antracita. The recessed open shelving is a textured woodgrain laminate, this one is called Castellina, and the desk surface uses a formica Stainless Steel laminate. The upper doors lift upwards on stays, and we used stainless steel pulls and handles on drawers and doors. We used LED puck lights over the work surface for task lighting.

The high-gloss finishes provide a modern contrast to historical brick.

Using woodgrain laminates for the open shelves provides a further interesting contrast.

Outside the bedroom, we also built two custom cabinets in alcoves that straddle the entrance to the bathroom. On the right side, we built a tall upper structure that serves as linen storage with drawers below, divided with an exposed brick area and another stainless countertop. On the left side of the bathroom entrance we built a bar.

dining room, condo, bar, linen closet, glass shelving

High-gloss cabinets take advantage of the height and bridge the entrance to the bathroom.

The client supplied an industrial hanging light, which shines through the glass shelves that sit in front of yet more exposed brick. Additional enclosed storage sits below another stainless counter, and all doors and drawers in these cabinets feature handle-less, touch-latch hardware for clean lines. The white high-gloss laminate flows with the rest of this space nicely, leaving the exposed brick and the stainless counters to be the features, whereas in the bedroom, the darker high-gloss laminate on the home office is the defining feature, making the desktop and brick secondary.

Linen storage is situated between the bedroom and the bathroom.

High-gloss laminates come in a variety of colors, and are ideal for converted lofts such as this. Ready to get started on your own custom built-in wall unit? Call us during business hours at 416.322.5575, or after hours, use this handy form to request an in-home consultation!

Dining Room Custom Built-in Wall Unit

Any custom wall unit needs to serve a variety of purposes and functions, and this custom built-in wall unit meets and exceeds those expectations! Here we have a custom cabinet that offers sensible storage, offers a bench for extra seating and makes a statement.

A statement-making wall unit in a Toronto waterfront condo

The striking custom cabinet is both eye-catching and an effective use of the limited space available in a Toronto condo. Nestled snugly between the air return on the left and the electrical / thermostat on the right, this design uses space efficiently and with its varied depth, the upper section does not overwhelm the room. Two-tone designs continue to set the trend, and here we have combined a woodgrain melamine finish called Sand Molina Ash with factory-painted white doors for a beautiful look. The uppers on this custom built-in wall unit feature touch-latch hardware on doors that are arranged in a playful, asymmetrical pattern, which really brings the structure to life.

Tucked underneath the seating area, for which the client supplied a complimentary cushion and padded back, are three pullout drawers, which feature handle-less touch-latch operation, like the doors above, so that there is nothing to get snagged on. We built this wall unit to the ceiling, and the fills across the top mimic the kicks across the bottom, for a complete, custom-fitted installation.

Setting the handles on the outsides allows for easy access to the storage behind the tall doors

Any custom built-in wall unit requires creative thinking. A great example on this project is the application of the tall doors on the sides. Most of the time, the dining table and chairs will be positioned closely in front of the custom cabinet, and maintaining access to the storage within is important. Usually, for the sake of the look the rule is to place handles towards the center of a custom wall unit, but doing that would have made access to the interiors awkward, as the hinges would have been positioned on the outsides, and the doors would swing towards you. So instead, we flipped that – by placing the handles on the outer edges, the hinges are now closer to the center, making it easier to open the doors and reach inside when the furniture is in place.

Great Wall Media Center Custom Cabinet

Custom cabinets are what we do – whether that’s in a closet or any other part of the home. We make custom cabinets for all of your storage needs, and they are tailor made for your space and tastes. This recent multi-purpose solution features a variety of finishes and solves multiple needs, and is a great example of how a custom cabinet can serve multiple goals.

Family room built-in with desk surface, book storage and media center.

The recent trend in custom cabinets has been to use more than one finish, most often a two-tone approach. This project, however, involves four different finishes, and while that could get busy, our designer Paulina put together a combination that is subtle and effective. The main finish used here for the structure of this custom cabinet is a dark gray called Anthracite, in a soft-to-the-touch finish known as Supermat, which is rapidly gaining in popularity. In this case it serves as the foundation of the design, used for the carcass of the custom cabinet itself, as well as the open shelving and desk surface on the left, which is creatively angled in front of the job in the wall. Anthracite nicely balances against the soft, lighter gray tone of the client’s walls.

Sliding door panels part to reveal a TV.

This built-in wall unit serves also as a media center, and the center of the cabinet is faced with sliding door panels in a woodgrain melamine called River Rock. The tracks for the sliding door panels are embedded in the Anthracite structure, and (being made of aluminum) nicely blend into the dark gray. The upper (lift-up) and lower (hinged) doors on this custom cabinetry use high-gloss White laminate, which nicely reflects light from the adjacent window. The fourth finish at work here is the factory-painted accent shelf that spans the wall near the top, including bridging above the “floating” side bookshelf cabinet. In this case, a Benjamin Moore finish called Spa Day was used – our painter works with any colour provided in a variety of sheens, and sprays a gorgeous, even finish.

Here’s what the sliding doors on this custom cabinet look like “in action”:

5 custom storage projects to inspire you in 2016

How are you going to get organized in 2016? Maybe it’s time to overhaul your closet with a custom closet design, or you’re ready to tackle the family room with custom cabinets, or maybe this is the year you get your home office fully organized and set up to take that next step. Space Solutions offers solutions for these and other spaces throughout your home with custom cabinetry in endless finish options. You’re ready to take that next step – here are 5 projects from our Houzz listing to inspire you, and get you on your way to clearing your New Year’s resolutions.

A contemporary home office

This installation showcases an L-shaped home office scenario, with included wire management channels room for two work stations. The laminates used on the custom cabinets are white “super matte” (an exciting, ultra-smooth finish, available in a variety of solid colours) and southwester woodgrain melamine. Drawers feature lateral file runners, for both legal and letter sized files. We also installed high-intensity LED strip lighting, embedded in the underside of the upper cabinets on both sides.

Custom closets

Even a simple reachin closet, done right, is an elegant effective solution to get you started on the right foot in 2016. Custom design allows us to design a custom closet that suits your needs, your space, your taste and your budget.

A custom Murphy bed

This side-tilt double Murphy bed uses chrome pulls and a beautiful melamine finish called “Linen”. The overhead and adjacent storage is stepped back, with the top-most levels all sitting just a little proud, creating a nice, simple detail. We also built a small desk area to the left of the bed, complete with over head storage and drawers. We can build our Murphy beds using a wide range of styles and finishes, and complement them with fully custom cabinetry around them, making your spare bedroom a home office, family room, library or more.

A wall unit with a fireplace

This project offers a bit of everything: wardrobes, drawer and laundry storage, a space for the TV and even a wall-mounted electric fireplace. When working with fireplaces you supply your own, and we build the cabinet to suit. Modern flat-panel fireplaces, just like flat-screen televisions, lend themselves nicely towards working with custom cabinets in any room.

A traditional library

This den was outfitted with luxurious stained wood to create a beautiful and functional library. The ultimate in custom cabinetry, featuring traditional five-piece solid wood on doors and drawer fronts, and real wood (maple) veneer on shelves and side panels, Space Solutions will have your custom den, home office, wall unit or library stained to suit and beautifully finished.

Complete Toronto Master Bedroom Project

Antique White master bedroomHere we would like to share this complete master bedroom project. This midtown Toronto home, where space as you can imagine is at a premium, needed a complete solution for living and storage space. And while often a Murphy Bed is the right solution, in this case our client desired a traditional bed, and had just enough space to make that work. By tailoring the design and application to meet their needs we were able to deliver a solution for them which could very well serve as inspiration for your complete master bedroom.

The first thing of note is that we actually built a platform for the bed itself, including integrated storage below, in the form of functional drawer space. Each side of the bed offers two deep drawers for storage including space for spare bedding. As you see in the detail images below (click to open them enlarged in a new window) the drawers may be opened without getting in the way of the bedding itself. By installing these drawers without handles – the fronts are oversized so you may easily pull them open from below – we avoid creating a hazard for tripping or snags.

Antique White master bedroom ras coverOn the window side of the master bedroom, there was a radiator along the wall. To deal with that we installed a radiator cover cabinet (sometimes simply called a ‘rad cover’). We used the same antique white laminate for the structure and door frames as for the rest of the installation, and the client selected an MDF screen which we had painted to match the laminate. The radiator itself did not run the entire length of the room, but for symmetry we installed the screening panels as if they did, and behind some of the doors there is additional storage, while the remainder allow the heat to radiate, and also open for any maintenance and access. The surface below the window neatly abuts the cabinets on the right end – where we provided some wardrobe and drawer storage.

Antique white master bedroomThe dark counter top used on either side of the bed – a popular woodgrain melamine tone called chocolate pear – creates unified night table space, and on the far side of the room, adjacent to the mirrored wardrobes, extends into a vanity area complete with its own mirrored backing. We also installed LED lights on three separate switches (which are stored inside the drawers on the relevant sides) to create display lighting for the upper glass cabinets, as well as reading lighting for either side of the bed. The LEDs blend nicely with the overhead lighting installed in the room itself. You can see detailed closeups below of the oil-rubbed bronze hardware used for the wardrobe doors (handles to match the knobs used on drawers) along with a pullout wardrobe rail used in this installation. The complete master bedroom project was designed, built and installed by Space Solution using antique white and chocolate pear finishes, with integrated mouldings, crown and other trimming details. Storage solutions for a modern Toronto condo

Today we’d like to do a walk-through of a project we did in a modern Toronto condo, with solutions in a variety of areas. You’ll see different looks and styles for different rooms, that in the end all work together to create space that is elegant and practical, and perhaps you’ll find some inspiration for your own home.

custom bedroom storage

The main showpiece in this condo was this bedroom piece. You know of course that Space Solutions makes Murphy Beds, but we also will create solutions that go around an existing bed. In this case, the clients had a wonderful bed already, and the task was to create a storage solution that went around it and worked with it, what is sometimes known as a bed surround. Our designer, Christopher, came up with a concept that looks great, and provides both a useful storage solution as well as a live and work space. To the left of the bed, we built a tall, narrow cabinet for enclosed storage, and the base of it protrudes and acts as a night table, so there’s a convenient space for a book, an alarm clock, a cell phone, etc. On the right-hand side, a desk was created for a work space, open at the bottom for legroom, and with convenient cubby hole storage directly above it. Across the top, and bridging the two sides, we built a creative series of open and enclosed storage, for display and easy-to-get-to areas, as well as concealed storage for things you may not want left out in the open, such as extra bedding behind the wide upper door.

Keeping things bright and light, we built the bulk of the structure using white melamine – also used for the closet peeking through the door to the right – and added exterior trims and facing with a high-gloss white finish, a popular, modern touch. The framed glass doors may look like aluminum, but they’re actually board, framed using a thermo laminate called Stainless. The doors then had the same white lami glass we used for our sliding doors inserted for a great look. For hardware we used the ever-popular “towel bar” style of handle in stainless steel, and we added a pair of LED puck lights above the sleeping area to provide more light for reading in bed.

Cayenne maple wall unit condo Toronto bedroomIn addition to the work in the bedroom, we also installed a built-in in the den. This storage solution is a wall unit for general storage, and required some drawer storage as part of things, for smaller loose items that don’t stay as well on shelves. In order to preserve the clean, vertical lines of the doors, we placed the drawer behind them. The drawer boxes themselves are the same size as they otherwise would be, but without the addition of a face or extra handles. So on the outside, you see a series of doors with consistent handles, but inside, it varies. This cabinet was built using melamine in Cayenne Maple, with flat doors; you might have thought that a crown moulding doesn’t go with flat fronts, but as you can see here, it works quite nicely and finishes off the cabinet. Click on the thumbnails below to see interior views of the drawers.

hidden drawershidden

china cabinetLastly, we also installed a simple built-in in the client’s dining room. This cabinet features a combination of solid doors for concealed storage as well as doors with clear glass inserts for display. Again, we added LED lighting to the cabinet for illuminating their display items, and further used glass for the shelves so that the light can pass through. This cabinet was built using a combination of melamine and thermo laminates in Chocolate Pear, with shaker-style solid doors. All three areas of the home feature different colors, different hardware and even different lines, but everything works in this condo. This was a new location for the client, but this approach also works nicely for you if you’re living in a house, and/or have lived there for many years.

Custom Built-in Fireplaces

Antique White custom built in fireplace media wall unit angleIt’s always the right time to plan a custom built-in fireplace wall unit. Maybe you don’t need to use the fireplace itself at the moment, but a multi-purpose built-in fireplace such as this one will get used all year round. This cabinet serves multiple uses: yes it has space for a wall-mounted fireplace, but it also functions as a bedroom wardrobe – with space for clothes hanging and drawer space – and features a hidden laundry hamper, as well as functioning as a media center, with room for a television and accoutrements. We’d like to show you some of these features today.

Antique white custom wall unit laundry hamper closedThis custom wall unit is constructed using one of our most popular finishes, a colour called Antique White. It’s a fairly universal colour, in that it is readily available in the various types of laminates that we use in our construction. Flat components, in this case comprising the structural parts like the cabinet’s sides and shelves, are achieved using melamine on board. Pieces that have shape to them – in this case, the baseboard, crown and doors and drawer fronts – are shaped in MDF with thermoplastic (sometimes called thermofoil) laminate.  Thermo is more flexible than melamine, and wraps in and out of the curves and wraps the edges. On some projects, we may supply a countertop or desktop using formica or arborite, in which this colour is also available. We can even have part, or all, of your built-in fireplace factory painted to match this colour. Or any other colour you wish!

Laundry hamper tilt out canvas liner

When is a bank of drawers not a bank of drawers? When it’s a door for a tilt out laundry hamper! The best place for the laundry hamper on this cabinet was right below the fireplace. To keep the overall structure symmetrical, we matched the adjacent 3 drawers with a false front composed of 3 faces pieced together. The result when closed – see the photo in the second paragraph above – is seamless and very effective.  You may be wondering why we put a laundry hamper in this built-in fireplace cabinet. Well, this wall unit is in the master bedroom, and functions as the master wardrobe.  So laundry makes a great deal of sense, and hidden this way is not obvious.

Scoop handle drawer boxWhile we’re at it, here’s another way to deal with drawers on a wall unit – we hid an additional bank behind the full height doors. These drawer boxes have simplified fronts, since they’re concealed behind the doors. We’ve employed “scoop” handles – allowing us to make the drawers full -depth behind the doors without compromising the depth with protruding handles or knobs. As you can see, the television in this wall unit is mounted relatively high – above the median point. As mentioned, we installed this built-in fireplace in a master bedroom, so that location for the television is ideal for watching in bed.  The spaces up above are intended for a DVD player, cable/satellite receiver, etc.  So this wall unit is truly a multi-purpose solution. It includes wardrobe space, drawer space, laundry hamper, media center and the built-in fireplace. All brought together in one beautiful solution.

Antique White custom builtin in fireplace media center wall unitWhen we design a built-in fireplace for you, it’s a multi-stage process, like many of our projects. You may start by coming to our showroom to see another example of a wall unit with a fireplace. You can see samples of our different finish options and talk about the process. If we build a cabinet for a built-in fireplace, you supply the fireplace unit, and whether you purchase yours at a specialty store or through an online dealer, we will build something to suit it, whether embedded or surface-mounted. We’ll arrange a site visit to take all measurements, check walls  and layouts – you can start with that site visit too, of course! You can arrange for your in-home consultation in the showroom, over the phone, or by filling out this handy appointment request form and submitting it online.  Appointments are available during the day during the week, but we can also accommodate some appointments for evenings and Saturdays with advance notice. Get on this now, and well before you need to turn it on you’ll have a built-in fireplace ready to keep you warm next winter!

A fun wall unit

Sometimes you get the opportunity to be extra creative with a wall unit, to great results. To wit:

living room wall unit with floating shelves

The inclination usually is to make everything symmetrical, and make the two sides around a fireplace match. But here’s an example of a terrific design that doesn’t follow that convention. A modern home with modern touches, the space called for a particular look, and our designer Paulina delivered. Taking a two-tone approach, we used a fairly common melamine finish called Chocolate Pear with a newer, rich colour called Walnut Amati (the lighter of the two woodgrains in the cabinets) and the results are dramatic. The two colours bring out the tone in the floor, and play nicely against the tone of the floor.

floating shelves above console cabinet

On either side of the fireplace, we built lower base cabinets, with recessed kickplates to create a floating effect.  The doors on the cabinets, upper and lower, feature a simple edge profile, and in the Walnut Amati finish, they really stand out. This finish has fooled more than one person into thinking they were looking at solid wood, it’s that good. The shelves in between are playfully staggered, making this wall interesting to look at, in addition to being useful.  Stainless steel square knobs complete the look, keeping everything boxed and compartmentalized.

interlocking custom cabinets with floating shelf

On the right-hand side of the fireplace, we placed another base unit, but with a twist; the doors on the left portion of the lower cabinet include a perforated MDF insert panel, stained to blend with the Walnut Amati, and allowing for storage of components to go with the television. Using the perforated panel accomplishes two things: one, it allows for venting, preventing components from over-heating, and two, at allows for the Blu-ray player, PVR, etc to be concealed, while still possible to activate them with the remote control.  These panels are quite handy for a variety of projects – indeed, we use them when making radiator covers – and come in a wide range of patterns.  Possibly our favorite detail on this project is the upper cabinets, and how they interlock with each other. The doors on the enclosed portion lift up, rather than swing out, and the open unit straddles around the enclosed one.

With all the unusual aspects on this design, it was challenging to execute, but the results were well worth it. Just imagine what we could do for you!
