6 Murphy Bed mattress tips

wall bed, mattress tips, toronto

Select the right mattress for your Space Solutions Murphy Bed

Here are 6 important mattress tips when planning your Murphy Bed installation – most often you supply your own, so these mattress tips can help ensure that your custom Murphy Bed is ideal for you and your space!

Mattress tips #1: Know your size requirements

Space Solutions uses genuine Murphy Bed hardware produced by Murphy Wall Beds of Canada, and builds the cabinet to suit, so you are getting not just a wall bed, but a genuine Murphy Bed. The Supreme Steel frame is sized for a standard Single, Double or Queen-size mattress in the standard length. (Space Solutions does not make Murphy Beds for extra-long or King-size mattresses.) 10″ is the standard maximum thickness that can be accommodated by the hardware. In special circumstances we can use a longer leg for thicker mattresses, which requires the cabinet to be built to a larger size; this is more costly, and may not be a fit for all spaces. The minimum thickness recommended for long-lasting comfort and to properly fit the hardware is 7″. So, any standard Single, Double or Queen size mattress between 7″ and 10″ may be used.

Mattress tips #2: Spring or Foam?

There are many types of mattresses available these days, and the good news is that most can be used in your custom Murphy Bed. This means that there is a good chance that you may already own a mattress that is appropriate! But assuming you do need a new mattress, one of the most important mattress tips is to get a spring (coil) mattress. They can offer the best long-term use in your Murphy Bed. Many of the “pillow top” varieties available are thicker than the maximum tolerances and are therefore excluded, and foam mattresses are not recommended at all – consider that most often a Murphy Bed is left in its closed position, which effectively stores the mattress on its side for extended periods of time; a foam mattress is more prone to settling, and this can affect long-term comfort, and also cause uneven balancing of the weight against the springs in the hardware.

Mattress tips #3: Frequency of use

Murphy Beds are useful for a variety of reasons. Maybe you have a very small condo, and you need a Murphy Bed as your every day bed so that you can fold it away and make other use of your space. In this case you will want to make sure you invest a long-lasting, highly comfortable mattress. Other times, Murphy Beds are meant for occasional use – in a room to be used for guests once in a while. Your guests still deserve a comfortable sleeping experience, which a Murphy Bed can provide, but it may not be necessary to invest in a brand-new mattress if you already own one that is suitable.

Mattress tips #4: Take advantage of mattress sales

Many of the “big box” mattress retailers have frequent promotions and sales on overstocked and discontinued models. This can allow you to source a quality mattress at a reasonable price! You don’t need a boxspring, since the mattress rests within the frame on the back side of the doors that you see when the bed is closed. As there are metal supports connecting the doors to serve as that platform, that is another reason why going no thinner than 7″ for your mattress is recommended for comfort.

Mattress tips #5: Have your mattress on site ahead of your installation

When we install your custom Murphy Bed, we need to have the mattress on site during the installation so that we may adjust the springs in the mechanism to perfectly account for the mattress’s weight. Different mattresses, even of the same size, will weigh differently depending on their composition, and we need to ensure that your Murphy Bed will open and close safely and smoothly. If you don’t already own a mattress that will be used, it is best to arrange for its delivery ahead of the installation to ensure there are no unnecessary delays or callbacks. When you place your Murphy Bed order we will remind you of the need to have your mattress on site on installation day; if we need to return at a later date because the mattress was not there the first time, a surcharge may apply. So making sure the mattress is there ahead of time guarantees a smooth installation.

The Basset Fairchild mattress, at 10″ thick, fits standard Murphy Bed installations

Still need a mattress for your Murphy Bed? We’ve always said that Space Solutions does not supply mattresses, mostly because we are in the custom cabinet business, not the mattress business. But good news – we have recently partnered with a local Canadian manufacturer named Kingsdown, and if you are purchasing a new custom Murphy Bed from Space Solutions, we can offer you one of their mattresses! We are able to offer the Basset Fairchild series, which is a 10″ continuous coil mattress. It is guaranteed to fit the standard Murphy Wall Beds of Canada hardware that we use, and is available in Single, Double and Queen-Size options. We currently have a Basset Fairchild on display in our showroom in a Double Murphy Bed, and you are welcome to come and check it out in person! If you would like more information about mattresses for our custom Murphy Beds, please contact your Space Solutions designer, or you are welcome to email us at info@spacesolutions.ca.

A Murphy Bed with an eye for design

A perfect custom Murphy Bed should blend into its surroundings so that the room is transformed smoothly into a multi-function space. Murphy Beds will most often be part of a custom cabinet scenario that includes additional storage, but can also be used in conjunction with a desk in a home office, a wardrobe in a spare bedroom, a media / game center in a family room or toy storage in a child’s play area. In this case, it’s a home office; a desk runs underneath the window and there is more than enough room for a Murphy Bed on the adjacent wall.

Double Side Tilt Murphy Bed in Sand and Southwester with stained wood desktop

This Murphy Bed design features a newly popular woodgrain melamine finish called Southwester, which has been getting a lot of use lately on our projects; it has elements of gray mixed in with the brown wood hues and conveys a natural, almost rustic look which really pops in a variety of projects. Here it serves as the foundation in this custom Murphy Bed, used as the trim, open shelving, back panels and fronts for the drawers under the desk top. Playing with the direction of the grain (subject to size and orientation of the piece) allows for some creative usage; on the backpanels the Southwester grain runs vertically, but on the drawer faces it runs horizontally.

Double Side Tilt Murphy Bed in Sand and Southwester showing angled headboard

Two-tone combinations have long been popular on any type of custom cabinet installation, including wall units, wardrobes and entertainment centers, but traditionally the contrasting finish has often been white. In this Murphy Bed design, a supermat laminate called Sand Beige was selected. Supermat is a type of finish that is ultra smooth, and matte; it doesn’t have a gloss sheen to it, or even a typical melamine texture to it, it’s that smooth. Here it is used to great effect, as the door panel on the Murphy Bed itself, the overhead flip-up doors (concealing bedding storage) and the lower door and file drawers on the desk side. Using Sand Beige with Southwester here brings out the warmer tones in this layout and brightens the space, will keeping it soft and subtle. Supermat laminates are available in a variety of colours, and we have samples at our showroom – you’ll want to feel them for yourself!

custom cabinetry

Upper detail around Murphy Bed, showing varying grain direction, depths and top cap treatment

Anytime we are installing custom cabinets around a corner or window (or both, as in this case) this gives us an opportunity to creatively solve a problem or how to bring materials together and keep the flow continuous. Sometimes walls aren’t straight, angles may not be perfect and at the end of the day the solution needs to make sense functionally as well as structurally – it has to go together somehow. Here we elected to have the shelving next to the Murphy Bed step back twice, with the deepest shelving directly over the bed, and the shallowest – display depth – in the corner facing the side of the desk, overhanging a recessed backer. This stepping feature is also mimicked across the top where we have provided cap shelves to fill the space at the ceiling, with a simple yet elegant detail as those pieces sit proud. The vertical trim next to the shallowest shelf area tucks in neatly behind the window frame.

computer desk, work station

File drawers (left) and pencil drawers (right) sit underneath the stained wood desktop

For the desk surface itself we used solid wood, and had it stained to compliment the flooring in this space. Under the desk at the seating area we provided a pair of pencil drawers, and on the lower left, in easy reach from a seated position, a pair of drawers for hanging files. While it is unlikely you would be sitting at that desk while the Murphy Bed is in use, there’s just enough space in this arrangement to do so if you wish. Contemporary brushed chrome handles on the Murphy Bed, file drawers, liftup doors (and the little door in the corner) unify the design and add a touch of flair to the space.

5 custom storage projects to inspire you in 2016

How are you going to get organized in 2016? Maybe it’s time to overhaul your closet with a custom closet design, or you’re ready to tackle the family room with custom cabinets, or maybe this is the year you get your home office fully organized and set up to take that next step. Space Solutions offers solutions for these and other spaces throughout your home with custom cabinetry in endless finish options. You’re ready to take that next step – here are 5 projects from our Houzz listing to inspire you, and get you on your way to clearing your New Year’s resolutions.

A contemporary home office

This installation showcases an L-shaped home office scenario, with included wire management channels room for two work stations. The laminates used on the custom cabinets are white “super matte” (an exciting, ultra-smooth finish, available in a variety of solid colours) and southwester woodgrain melamine. Drawers feature lateral file runners, for both legal and letter sized files. We also installed high-intensity LED strip lighting, embedded in the underside of the upper cabinets on both sides.

Custom closets

Even a simple reachin closet, done right, is an elegant effective solution to get you started on the right foot in 2016. Custom design allows us to design a custom closet that suits your needs, your space, your taste and your budget.

A custom Murphy bed

This side-tilt double Murphy bed uses chrome pulls and a beautiful melamine finish called “Linen”. The overhead and adjacent storage is stepped back, with the top-most levels all sitting just a little proud, creating a nice, simple detail. We also built a small desk area to the left of the bed, complete with over head storage and drawers. We can build our Murphy beds using a wide range of styles and finishes, and complement them with fully custom cabinetry around them, making your spare bedroom a home office, family room, library or more.

A wall unit with a fireplace

This project offers a bit of everything: wardrobes, drawer and laundry storage, a space for the TV and even a wall-mounted electric fireplace. When working with fireplaces you supply your own, and we build the cabinet to suit. Modern flat-panel fireplaces, just like flat-screen televisions, lend themselves nicely towards working with custom cabinets in any room.

A traditional library

This den was outfitted with luxurious stained wood to create a beautiful and functional library. The ultimate in custom cabinetry, featuring traditional five-piece solid wood on doors and drawer fronts, and real wood (maple) veneer on shelves and side panels, Space Solutions will have your custom den, home office, wall unit or library stained to suit and beautifully finished.

Murphy Beds in the Globe and Mail

Toronto Murphy Bed double side tilt custom cabinet deskwall bed

Recently the Globe and Mail published an article about Murphy Beds and spoke to Andrew about what we can do for you. We make Murphy Beds for single, double and queen size mattresses, with both vertical and horizontal orientations. The Murphy Bed installation shown here we’ve written about before, and is a side-tilt double. The Globe article also offers some great tips on selecting a mattress (we don’t supply mattresses, so the mattress you provide is entirely up to you!) whether you’re purchasing for a Murphy Bed or a conventional bed. With a Murphy Bed, you don’t require a boxspring, as the mattress rests on the backside of the cabinet door.

Have look at our Murphy Beds gallery for inspiration on what we can do for you today!

The Murphy Bed in a multi-purpose family room

Wall Bed Rosedale midtownWe’ve posted a couple of times previously about work done at this home, but hadn’t yet showcased the Murphy Bed in the lower level family room. While often times a Murphy Bed will be used in a small bedroom in order to be able to reclaim space during the day, Murphy Beds are most commonly installed in a room that serves a variety of purposes, like a home office, a den, or in this case, the family room. The lower level of this home looks out on the back yard and its patio and pool, and features a long wall of floor-to-ceiling windows. The client wanted something dynamic for this space, something that would catch the available light and stand out, yet not distract from the wall-mounted television he was providing, and chose a laminate called Stainless. This finish is available in the various laminate forms we use in our cabinet construction, and resembles brushed stainless steel when viewed up close. We used melamine for the flat surfaces, and a thermofoil version for the raised panel doors. The use of the shaker profile with Stainless was a bold choice, and really brought this Murphy Bed to life.

Wall Bed Rosedale midtownThe room in which we installed this wall unit and Murphy Bed has a lot of features for its daily use that aren’t seen in these shots; a bar, a pool table and of course a couple of comfortable loungers for watching the big game on television – you might even call it a bit of a “man cave”.  And while that’s certainly the main use of the space, there are times when you may have guests coming for extended stays, and that’s where including a Murphy Bed is ideal. Our Murphy Beds use genuine Murphy hardware, with its patented spring-loaded mechanism, which ensures safe, smooth and easy operation and carries a lifetime warranty against failures. The best part is that a genuine Murphy Bed uses actual, standard mattresses (you provide your own) so you or your guests will be as comfortable as though they were sleeping in a regular bed. We use different combinations of springs during the installation to perfectly balance the hardware for the weight of your mattress – it’s so easy to open and close that anyone can use your Murphy Bed confidently and safely.

Other features of this multi-purpose Murphy Bed installation include a wardrobe on the lefthand side, L-shaped shelves that wrap the corner, overhead doors that lift up for bedding storage, 1 1/2″ trims and lips on the open shelves to create a more robust look, a buildup around the vent pipe on the righthand side (which was duplicated to the left of the television for symmetry) and a false door on the lower right containing a vent grill for the air circulation. All in all, this is one of the more unique Murphy Beds we have installed in the past couple of years. There are some additional angles of the finished product below, and if you would like to get started on your Murphy Bed project, you can request an in-home consultation by filling out this handy form.

High-Gloss Laminate Trends

work station Loft High-gloss laminates are in higher demand than ever before, and Space Solutions offers a full range of incredible colors from a variety of sources. Where once upon a time, if you wanted a glossy finish on your cabinets you needed to invest in lacquer finishes – which we still offer as well – you can now choose from a dynamic pallette of solid colors, woodgrains and other patterns with a durable, high-gloss finish for less cost. The home office to the left is from a recent project in a loft space near Liberty Village in Toronto. We used a high-gloss finish called Antracita for the cabinet exteriors – doors, drawer fronts, fillers and end panels. The dark gray hue of the high-gloss board is highly reflective, and brings light to a space in a way that a traditional matte dark finish never could. The cabinet interiors were done using a matte version of the same color. As a contrast, here we used a textured woodgrain melamine called Castellina for the open shelves and back panel above the work surface, and for that surface itself we used a laminate in a stainless steel finish. You can see more of this project on our Houzz page, where we show other angles, and also some additional cabinets in a high-gloss white in the entertaining area. This loft offered an interesting challenge with its rustic restored flooring and exposed brick, and the high-gloss finish proved to be an amazing complement.

High Gloss White Built-In Wardrobe TorontoNo question, white remains the most popular choice in high-gloss laminates, as it is readily available in all formats that we work with – melamine, thermoplastic, HPLs, and more. A high-gloss thermoplastic option is important if you wish to have a formed, shaker-style door, for example, or if you prefer to have the laminate wrap the edge on a flat slab door, instead of the seam you get using melamine and separate edgebanding. But considering that the preference for high-gloss tends to coincide most often with a preference for a flat, linear style, the color options are broadening all the time. Here’s a wardrobe we did for another customer in their condo. We used a high-gloss white thermo laminate, which wraps the edges of the material without seams. Again, as if often the case, we used regular white melamine for the cabinet interiors – basically, you want all the aspects that you see on a regular basis to match, and be that higher-end finish, but there’s no point in using the high-gloss material on the interior where it won’t be seen. Combined with our old favorite, the “towel bar” handle, it makes for a classic combination.

Here are some other examples of different ways to use high-gloss materials on your next project!

high gloss door

This cabinet was constructed largely using a melamine finish called Aria. But this dual-purpose cabinet needed an innovative way to conceal a television, so we added a sliding panel using a high-gloss melamine called Euroline 2.

sliding closet doors

This project featured high-gloss drawer fronts inside the closet, and high-gloss white panels using our sliding door hardware for a truly unique result.

two tone Murphy Bed

Here’s a twist on working with high-gloss. In this case, we used a green apple high-gloss for the back panels on this wood grain Murphy Bed. In combination with the LED lights we added across the top, the contrast of the glossy backers with the matte melamine really stands out.

Come to our showroom, where we can show you our full range of high-gloss options, and see how we work. And then set up an in-home consultation to meet with our of our designers, who will take measurements and go through concepts with you, and come up with a plan for your next project. The Spare Room Murphy Bed

wall bed, toronto

When folded away, a Murphy bed frees up precious floor space.

Murphy Beds, also known as wall beds, are an idea that’s been around for over 100 years, but we build Murphy Beds that are modern and exciting. It’s become quite common for us to be installing Murphy Beds in small condos, possibly in a spare bedroom or a den, or in basements in a home where every inch counts. But a Murphy Bed is an ideal solution for any space that may not need to always function as a bedroom, or when you want to maintain as much available space as possible. Here’s an example of a Murphy Bed we installed in a new home built in central Toronto. This was a fairly spacious three-bedroom house, and this room was the smallest of the 3 bedrooms, set up for a teenager. Rather than use a standard bed in the middle of the floor, they opted for a double side-tilt Murphy Bed, surrounded by a desk and book storage. The desk, next to the window, features a pair of pencil drawers below the surface, and open shelving above, and we added open cubbies above the Murphy Bed and a short book tower on the right side. We employed a lot of little size variances in this structure to keep it all very interesting, and to keep the Murphy Bed from dominating this small room. The top-most surfaces above the desk, cubbies, Murphy Bed and bookshelf all sit a little proud – that is, they protrude just slightly beyond the structures below, creating a shadow line effect. The bookshelf is also set back slightly in depth, as a 16″ deep tower – the standard depth for a Murphy Bed cabinet – is deeper than necessary for books, and reducing the depth also makes the cabinet more interesting, and allows it to visually recede in the space.

wall bed, toronto

A double side tilt Murphy bed is a compact solution for a small room.

For this space we installed a side-tilt Murphy Bed. Side-tilts are often done in spaces that either have a height restriction, or perhaps the location of the bed is dictated by a feature of the room, and you might not be able to have it open the traditional way without conflicting with something. In this case, however, we both had ample height, and the room was long enough that we could have had the Murphy Bed oriented in the standard way, but we went with a side-tilt anyway. We decided that a vertical orientation was going to “loom” in this small room, and besides, the ability to offer storage above the Murphy Bed, and continue the “stepping down” effect of the structure was desirable, too. Behind the bed, you can see the angled headboard which, even though the mattress is on its side, still provides a stable feature that helps strengthen the structure across that wide span, and helps close the gap so one doesn’t lose things behind the bed. The entire structure was built using standard 3/4″ melamine board in a finish called Sheer Linen, a laminate with a beige hue that features a pattern resembling the cross-hatching of a woven fabric. In an industry that is dominated by woodgrain patterns, a finish like this really stands out and brings a nice touch to any project. (Note that in the weblink above, the color online presents more gray than it really is. Always view an actual sample when making your purchasing decision!)

A double Murphy Bed, whether oriented vertically or horizontally, still offers ample room for a single person or even a couple, and as with all Murphy Beds, you’re using a real mattress – maximum thickness of 10″. That maximum of 10″ allows the crossbar that links the feet to rotate up and over the mattress when you close the cabinet. We use only genuine Murphy Bed hardware for all of our Murphy Bed installations. The spring-loaded mechanism is warrantied by the manufacturer, and all of our installations carry are guaranteed for the lifetime of you owning them.We have two Murphy Beds on display in our showroom for you to try out and get started on your next project today!

Murphy Beds and Wall Beds

Wall Bed Murphy Bed Toronto Shaker LightsMurphy Beds, sometimes known as Wall Beds, are a great solution for a multi-functional space that needs to be able to accommodate a bed, be it for occasional or everyday use. Consider Murphy Beds for your home office, den, a family room, even an open-concept space without a defined bedroom – a custom Murphy Bed offers you a real bed, with a real mattress and real comfort, that may be concealed when not in use.

We start with genuine Murphy® hardware – the lightweight steel frame provides unmatched reliability and strength, is rated to hold up to 2000 lbs, and is designed for everyday use. The patented fold-over steel leg not only keeps clear when open to prevent stubbing toes, but when closed, rotates in to hold bedding in place. The spring mechanism counterbalances the weight of the mattress to allow gentle “fingertip” raising and lowering. Our trained installers will adjust the springs to ensure smooth, easy operation, and guaranteed installation. And our solid 3/4” cabinet construction simply can not be beat. You supply a standard-size mattress (single, double or queen, with a maximum thickness of 10”), and we mount your Wall Bed against the wall – so your floors stay intact, and your cabinet is safe and secure. Most often, you can close your Wall Bed fully made-up with sheets and blankets, instantly ready for use.

Side Tilt Wall Bed Murphy Bed desk table TorontoHave a low ceiling or other height restriction? Consider a side-tilt Murphy Bed – with the mattress oriented sideways, you can still make use of the space’s full height with storage for your bedding. Small room and only expect to need the bed once in a blue moon? We can mount a fold-away table to the closed bed exterior, which you can close up before turning your work area into a sleeping space. Converting a windowless den in your condo and concerned about light? We can add LED lighting to your Murphy Bed cabinet, providing low-energy/low-heat yet bright light for you to read and work by. We can help you solve your situation, and it all starts with our complementary in-home consultation. Or drop by our showroom to try out a Murphy Bed in person!

Like all of our projects, our Murphy Beds are custom-designed and fitted for your space and style – add-ons available include profile exteriors, mouldings, endless finish options (including factory painted MDF in the color of your choice) and as usual we will manufacture drawers, shelves, desks and wardrobes to make your Wall Bed, or Murphy Bed Solution a total Space Solution.
