The custom sofa Murphy Bed

The sofa Murphy Bed combination – a concept that has been around for a while, page but marks a newer addition to our Murphy Bed offerings at Space Solutions. One of the main reasons to install a Murphy Bed is to allow a room to serve other purposes aside from sleeping quarters. We often see them used in home offices and family rooms, more about especially with the rising popularity of smaller condo units in Toronto. Even a larger room may need to serve multiple purposes, look and the project highlighted here is a great example of how combining a Murphy Bed with a sofa can change how you use your space for the better.

This multi-purpose room features a home office, a sofa and a Murphy Bed for guests.

In this project, the room will mostly be used as a work area, and also for entertaining. But the simple addition of a custom sofa in front of the Murphy Bed opens up further possibilities. With the couch located close to the window, it not only provides a comfortable seating area with a view, it is also well positioned facing the built-in wall unit on the opposite wall, which houses a television and its components. The structure is built using a combination of melamine and thermo laminates in Morning Dew, in a satin finish. All the cabinets in the project feature LED lighting for display, task and reading light, without compromising the viewing experience when watching TV.

The LED lights above the TV may be turned off from the sofa with a remote control.

So let’s talk about the sofa Murphy Bed and how this works. The idea is that moving the entire couch in order to get to the bed is not what you want to do – you don’t want to drag your sofa across the room, and in many cases, you don’t have the space to do that – after all, you’re already considering a Murphy Bed as a space saver! To bring this all together, we incorporate the sofa with the Murphy Bed. You can see in the image below that the sides of the Murphy Bed are extra wide, resulting in what we often call “flutes”. This is to help maintain spacing around the bed cabinet, and indeed, the sofa may be secured against those flutes to keep everything aligned. So rather than having to relocate the entire sofa, you instead simply remove the back and bottom cushions, and lower the Murphy Bed over the sofa frame, like below.

Custom queen size Murphy Bed with integrated sofa

The transition from sofa to Murphy Bed is seamless and easy.

This combination of sofa with Murphy Bed allows us to still use genuine Murphy Wall Beds of Canada’s hardware, which we use on our other Murphy Bed projects. The project shown here features a queen size Murphy Bed, but we can also do this combination with single and doubles – we can even combine a sofa with a side-tilt (horizontal) Murphy Bed, provided it is a double or a queen (a single side tilt does not protrude far enough to clear the frame on the sofa). Space Solutions works with a custom sofa builder to design a sofa that is comfortable and stylish for this complete solution. You can specify the fabric, the legs, even design of the arms.

A genuine sofa with a genuine Murphy Bed is genuinely perfect.

As always, we design our Murphy Bed projects with you and your space in mind. Choose from an extensive series of finish and panel options, plus endless hardware choices and upgrades. This queen size Murphy Bed includes an angles headboard at the back – so you can sit up and watch TV from bed if you wish – plus LED reading lights that may be easily controlled with a remote without getting up. A genuine Murphy Bed uses a real mattress – spring or coil – up to 10″ thick for great comfort.

Introducing Coloured Glass for Sliding Doors!

Black and Pink Back Painted Glass doors

We’re thrilled to introduce new options for our successful Niagara series sliding door program. The glass inserts are back-painted, website so they are fully opaque; no matter what you have behind the doors, pill things will be concealed, and your room will be beautiful and unique.  The doors pictured to the left use a combination of Black and Shocking Pink.

White and Green Back Painted Glass Sliding doors

With over a dozen colours to choose from, you can create truly unique combinations to suit your style and decor.  Create a scheme that compliments your furniture or a piece of art on your walls.  For coloured glass options, we use 6mm Starfire glass, which is glass that has its iron content vastly reduced, so you are working with truly clear glass that doesn’t have a green tone that would conflict with the colour selected. The set on the right uses a combination of White and Pear Green.

These doors are great in office spaces, too.  Close off your Guest closet with a set that makes a statement, and runs smoothly. The colour palette is still evolving, but so far includes a few shades of blue, some greens and yellows, and some gorgeous neutral tones, like Oyster.  We have physical samples of the glass at our showroom now.

The images shown all feature regular Starfire glass, which is glossy. You have the further option of having the glass Acid-Etched, which gives it that frosted look and texture, and softens the brightness to a wonderful effect. These doors will look great in any room in the home, or office.

* Note: Back-Painted glass is not recommended for use in Room Divider applications, where the backside of the doors will be regularly seen and handled, as it the backside is noticeably different from the front.

Sliding Door Program

Choc Pear Whit Lami doors

Our Niagara Series program for sliding doors has been a big success  We continue to explore new materials to combine with the hardware to create unique door systems.  By far, nurse the most popular option is the White Lami glass, creating a frosted glass look, without the expense of blasted glass.  We have also been incorporating mirror and board inserts, sometimes within the same door panel, to great effect.  Board inserts are available in 9 standard colors, but we have also used material to custom laminate the board, which means a nearly endless array of options.  Click here to view a PDF that shows you the standard offerings for panel colours; of course, you should make your decision based on physical samples.
