October Projects

We’ve been busy this autumn, as the weather changes and people start spending more time indoors, and that means people are focusing more on their interiors. Whether you need help with storage, creating space or dividing your space, Space Solutions can help. Here’s just a few recent projects we’ve completed this month.

Custom fireplace cabinets

Many homes have valuable space surrounding a fireplace, and custom cabinetry both completes the space and provides essential storage. In some cases, we may even build cabinetry to accommodate a new electric fireplace that you provide. Here’s an installation that provides simple, elegant storage in the alcoves on either side of a hearth. We used supermat white for the structures, and added “floating shelves” above the cabinets. The open shelves are anchored on the sides for a guaranteed installation that still offers the floating look. Supermat is an ultra-smooth finish that looks as great as it feels, and comes in a variety of colour options.

Using touch latch hardware on cabinet doors allows you to skip handles, and keep clean lines.

Custom wall units

A major goal with any custom wall unit is making living spaces more livable. This built-in uses classic white with shaker-style doors, a timeless look. With inset upper doors and a simple applied top trim, this custom cabinet focuses on function and provides ample storage for any space.

Drilling holes for adjustable shelves in groups keeps the structure from looking too busy, while still affording flexibility.

Custom closets

Custom walk-in closets are essential storage for any home. We design your custom closet not just for your space, but for your needs and your style, and every closet solution can be an unique as you. This walk-in closet offers a contemporary look, with simple drawer fronts. We used Weekend Getaway, part of Tafisa’s Viva Series of finishes, which provide great tones and textures. Solid nickel handles make a statement that is functional and attractive.

pullout shelf, shoe shelf, custom drawers, double hanging, walk-in closet, dream closet, master closet

Recessed shelves ease access to the clothes hanging along the back wall, and pullout shelves are ideal for shoe storage.

Custom room dividers

Our custom door program continues to be ideal for not just closets, but also for room dividers. Smooth-running European aluminum hardware provides guaranteed operation, and using frosted white lami glass provides privacy without darkening the space. In some cases, such as this one, we get asked to do something extra creative. Rather than take the door panels all the way to the 9-foot ceiling, we installed a fixed glass panel at the top and sliding doors below, creating a transom effect.

The Multi-functional Wall Bed

We’ve been making custom murphy beds for many years, including murphy beds with integrated desk options. Space Solutions is pleased to introduce the latest option for our bed offerings, the multi-functional wall bed. This modern wall bed system allows for a desk or shelves to be installed on the outside of the bed – surfaces which stay level when the bed is lowered so you don’t have to clear them when using your new custom bed.

The multifunctional wall bed offers stable desk option that is easy to operate.

Using the Stella system, we recently constructed this double wall bed using high-gloss white for the exterior doors, as well as for the desk surface. The cabinet was built using supermat antracita. This combination of white with antracita is proving to be quite popular, and was a success in this custom cabinet project also. We also used high-gloss white for the backers on the cabinet, including a simple headboard treatment behind the sleeping area.

The desk on this wall bed is synchronized with the bed platform so it stays level when lowered, and acts as a stable base.

The Stella system is available in both vertical and horizontal bed orientations are available for either double or queen size beds. In all cases, the Stella comes with a desk surface.

The Stella offers a deep surface that may be used as a desk or table.

When lowered, the Stella wall bed is supported by a foot as well as the synchronized desk surface and its brackets.

Custom Stella wall beds may additionally include an upper storage shelf in most scenarios, and the Stella also is available in a horizontal orientation. (Horizontal Stella wall beds with an upper shelf are not available in a double size, only queen.)

On a horizontal queen Stella wall bed, the optional upper shelf acts as the bed’s foot when lowered.

The addition of the optional upper shelf makes your custom wall bed a true work station solution.

Space Solutions is pleased to offer additional custom wall bed solutions, such as the Luna system. Ideal for family room solutions where a desk surface isn’t needed, the Luna is available in either double or queen sizes, and both come with either two or three shelves. The Luna does not come in a horizontal orientation, but is still ideal for many spaces, whether you live in a house or a condo.

2 Great Kids Bedroom Built-ins

Here’s a good example of how we contributed custom built-in storage for one family’s son and daughter. Solving storage needs for kids can be a challenge – children can be notoriously picky, and as children grow their needs can change. Finding a custom solution that endures and appeals is essential, and this project does that.

builtin, wardrobe, armoire, closet, desk, factory painted

Creative color selection for the exposed wall above the desk adds depth and interest.

Our client had two adjacent bedrooms for the children, and in typical Toronto style each bedroom’s closet was nestled against each other. This limited the storage space available in each bedroom, as the other bedroom’s closet essentially backed into the room. The client had their contractor remove the defined closet spaces by taking out their walls, and this freed up more space for functional storage in each room, and by installing built-ins for each child we were able to not only make more efficient use of the space, the staggered depths of the built-in cabinets help prevent the space from being taken over by custom cabinets.

builtin, wardrobe, armoire, closet, desk, factory painted

Recessing the toekicks and using a cap shelf across the tops is good for the toes and the eyes.

There’s a number of little details applied here that make these custom cabinets great built-ins. For the bases, the toekicks – and the side of the drawer pedestal under the desk – are recessed. This helps keep people from stubbing toes and also adds interest. As with many older houses in Toronto, walls and ceilings are out a bit, and while our custom cabinets are square and have right angles, maybe your room doesn’t. The cap shelf applied above the wardrobe cabinet helps minimize the fact that the ceiling slopes upwards towards the right hand wall. The exposed wall area behind the desk was painted out by the client to complement the walls adjacent to the custom cabinetry, adding additional visual interest, and a glass desktop allows for their daughter to display some of her favourite things on her desk while she does her homework.

builtin, wardrobe, armoire, closet, desk, factory painted

When you have an effective design already, why change it? Stick with what works!

In the other bedroom, we mostly replicated the design with a mirror image of the layout, and installed another custom built-in wardrobe with desk. The most obvious difference is the colour palette; for the son’s room, a different colour scheme was selected, and as with the daughter’s room, the exposed wall area behind the desk was painted out a complementary colour. The built-ins for both kids feature factory-painted exteriors, and factory-painting is a great choice for any built-in. Pick a colour and our paint shop will do it – and not only do you get a gorgeous finish, factory painted cabinets can offer more flexibility in decorative details including trims and mouldings, which once painted all match perfectly. The daughter’s cabinets were painted Chantilly Lace as a softer contrast to the bright hues in that room, while the son’s cabinets were painted Chelsea Gray as a bolder contrast to his wall colour.

builtin, wardrobe, armoire, closet, desk, factory painted

For factory-painted built-ins, we paint the exteriors – what you always see – and use melamine for interiors.

Aside from the exterior colour, the other main difference between these two kids’ custom built-ins is what happens inside. As with any factory-painted built-in, you paint the exteriors mostly, the things you see all the time: doors, sides, trims, drawer fronts and any exposed shelves or surfaces. For the interiors, we usually will use a standard melamine finish – in this case white – as that keeps costs down and as the interior surfaces will get more contact the melamine wears better. As you can see in the photo above, we did still paint out the leading edges of the shelves and side panels, as small aspects of them are visible around the doors and would otherwise stand out. For the son’s and daughter’s wardrobes we installed slightly different interior configurations, tailored to the kids’ needs. Alternate views of both cabinets may be seen below.

Dining Room Custom Built-in Wall Unit

Any custom wall unit needs to serve a variety of purposes and functions, and this custom built-in wall unit meets and exceeds those expectations! Here we have a custom cabinet that offers sensible storage, a bench for extra seating and makes a statement.

wall unit, custom cabinet, custom cabinetry, bench, built in, Toronto, condo living

A statement-making wall unit in a Toronto waterfront condo

The striking custom cabinet is both eye-catching and an effective use of the limited space available in a Toronto condo. Nestled snugly between the air return on the left and the electrical / thermostat on the right, this design uses space efficiently and with its varied depth, the upper section does not overwhelm the room. Two-tone designs continue to set the trend, and here we have combined a woodgrain melamine finish called Sand Molina Ash with factory-painted white doors for a beautiful look. The uppers on this custom built-in wall unit feature touch-latch hardware on doors that are arranged in a playful, asymmetrical pattern, which really brings the structure to life.

With the table moved aside, a view of the bench with drawers below a (client-supplied) cushion

Tucked underneath the seating area, for which the client supplied a complimentary cushion and padded back, are three pullout drawers, which feature handle-less touch-latch operation, like the doors above, so that there is nothing to get snagged on. We built this wall unit to the ceiling, and the fills across the top mimic the kicks across the bottom, for a complete, custom-fitted installation.

Setting the handles on the outsides allows for easy access to the storage behind the tall doors

Any custom built-in wall unit requires creative thinking. A great example on this project is the application of the tall doors on the sides. Most of the time, the dining table and chairs will be positioned closely in front of the custom cabinet, and maintaining access to the storage within is important. Usually, for the sake of the look the rule is to place handles towards the center of a custom wall unit, but doing that would have made access to the interiors awkward, as the hinges would have been positioned on the outsides, and the doors would swing towards you. So instead, we flipped that – by placing the handles on the outer edges, the hinges are now closer to the center, making it easier to open the doors and reach inside when the furniture is in place.

Great Wall Media Center Custom Cabinet

Custom cabinets are what we do – whether that’s in a closet or any other part of the home. We make custom cabinets for all of your storage needs, and they are tailor made for your space and tastes. This recent multi-purpose solution features a variety of finishes and solves multiple needs, and is a great example of how a custom cabinet can serve multiple goals.

Family room built-in with desk surface, book storage and media center.

The recent trend in custom cabinets has been to use more than one finish, most often a two-tone approach. This project, however, involves four different finishes, and while that could get busy, our designer Paulina put together a combination that is subtle and effective. The main finish used here for the structure of this custom cabinet is a dark gray called Anthracite, in a soft-to-the-touch finish known as Supermat, which is rapidly gaining in popularity. In this case it serves as the foundation of the design, used for the carcass of the custom cabinet itself, as well as the open shelving and desk surface on the left, which is creatively angled in front of the job in the wall. Anthracite nicely balances against the soft, lighter gray tone of the client’s walls.

Sliding door panels part to reveal a TV.

This built-in wall unit serves also as a media center, and the center of the cabinet is faced with sliding door panels in a woodgrain melamine called River Rock. The tracks for the sliding door panels are embedded in the Anthracite structure, and (being made of aluminum) nicely blend into the dark gray. The upper (lift-up) and lower (hinged) doors on this custom cabinetry use high-gloss White laminate, which nicely reflects light from the adjacent window. The fourth finish at work here is the factory-painted accent shelf that spans the wall near the top, including bridging above the “floating” side bookshelf cabinet. In this case, a Benjamin Moore finish called Spa Day was used – our painter works with any colour provided in a variety of sheens, and sprays a gorgeous, even finish.

Here’s what the sliding doors on this custom cabinet look like “in action”:

The Custom Master Bedroom Walk In Closet

Every home needs a custom closet. Custom closets have long been the foundation of our business, and for good reason – storage is more and more at a premium in every house and condo in Toronto these days. We build custom cabinets for storage in every space in the home, and closets are no exception. Even a relatively simple closet organizer will likely feature a custom cabinet of some sort, as every solution we design and install is custom-fitted for your space and your needs. The custom master bedroom walk in closet featured in this post is a great example of the various features you may employ to truly get the most out of your closet.

Custom walk-in closet in white with shaker-style fronts

This walk in custom closet shows how to handle a narrow yet long closet space. By placing all the clothes hanging along one wall, valuable walking space down the center of the closet is maintained, making access a cinch. Shelf and drawer space doesn’t require as much depth and clothes hanging, which is why this works so well. At the entrance to this space, to the left, a shallower tower of shoe shelves was installed, both providing easy access for shoes as well as easing the entry to the closet.

shoe shelves, shoe storage, shaker drawers

Shoe shelving on either side of drawer towers makes for an interesting use of space

An interesting detail about this walk-in closet is that its entrance isn’t closed off from the bedroom with a door – instead, the passageway, adjacent to a window, is left exposed to better light the space. At the exposed end, we designed and installed a custom wardrobe cabinet, keeping the most easily-seen parts of the closet extra neat and tidy.

custom cabinet, walk in closet, walk-in closet, Rosdeale

A custom wardrobe within a closet offers additional order and keeps things elegant and tidy.

Keeping the walking space down the center of the custom closet clear not only makes access simple, it also helps bring extra light into the space. No dark corners here! A clearance of two feet wide down the middle is a good minimum; the three feet of space achieved here is even better. And there is still ample clothes hanging space along that one long wall – 18 feet of space for shorter clothes hanging (shirts, folded pants, skirts) and another 3 feet of long hanging space (dresses, gowns, pants hung long by the cuff), plus the wardrobe space.

While sometimes a design challenge, a window in a custom closet brings light to the space.

A Murphy Bed with an eye for design

A perfect custom Murphy Bed should blend into its surroundings so that the room is transformed smoothly into a multi-function space. Murphy Beds will most often be part of a custom cabinet scenario that includes additional storage, but can also be used in conjunction with a desk in a home office, a wardrobe in a spare bedroom, a media / game center in a family room or toy storage in a child’s play area. In this case, it’s a home office; a desk runs underneath the window and there is more than enough room for a Murphy Bed on the adjacent wall.

wall bed custom cabinets

Double Side Tilt Murphy Bed in Sand and Southwester with stained wood desktop

This Murphy Bed design features a newly popular woodgrain melamine finish called Southwester, which has been getting a lot of use lately on our projects; it has elements of gray mixed in with the brown wood hues and conveys a natural, almost rustic look which really pops in a variety of projects. Here it serves as the foundation in this custom Murphy Bed, used as the trim, open shelving, back panels and fronts for the drawers under the desk top. Playing with the direction of the grain (subject to size and orientation of the piece) allows for some creative usage; on the backpanels the Southwester grain runs vertically, but on the drawer faces it runs horizontally.

wall bed

Double Side Tilt Murphy Bed in Sand and Southwester showing angled headboard

Two-tone combinations have long been popular on any type of custom cabinet installation, including wall units, wardrobes and entertainment centers, but traditionally the contrasting finish has often been white. In this Murphy Bed design, a supermat laminate called Sand Beige was selected. Supermat is a type of finish that is ultra smooth, and matte; it doesn’t have a gloss sheen to it, or even a typical melamine texture to it, it’s that smooth. Here it is used to great effect, as the door panel on the Murphy Bed itself, the overhead flip-up doors (concealing bedding storage) and the lower door and file drawers on the desk side. Using Sand Beige with Southwester here brings out the warmer tones in this layout and brightens the space, will keeping it soft and subtle. Supermat laminates are available in a variety of colours, and we have samples at our showroom – you’ll want to feel them for yourself!

custom cabinetry

Upper detail around Murphy Bed, showing varying grain direction, depths and top cap treatment

Anytime we are installing custom cabinets around a corner or window (or both, as in this case) this gives us an opportunity to creatively solve a problem or how to bring materials together and keep the flow continuous. Sometimes walls aren’t straight, angles may not be perfect and at the end of the day the solution needs to make sense functionally as well as structurally – it has to go together somehow. Here we elected to have the shelving next to the Murphy Bed step back twice, with the deepest shelving directly over the bed, and the shallowest – display depth – in the corner facing the side of the desk, overhanging a recessed backer. This stepping feature is also mimicked across the top where we have provided cap shelves to fill the space at the ceiling, with a simple yet elegant detail as those pieces sit proud. The vertical trim next to the shallowest shelf area tucks in neatly behind the window frame.

computer desk, work station

File drawers (left) and pencil drawers (right) sit underneath the stained wood desktop

For the desk surface itself we used solid wood, and had it stained to compliment the flooring in this space. Under the desk at the seating area we provided a pair of pencil drawers, and on the lower left, in easy reach from a seated position, a pair of drawers for hanging files. While it is unlikely you would be sitting at that desk while the Murphy Bed is in use, there’s just enough space in this arrangement to do so if you wish. Contemporary brushed chrome handles on the Murphy Bed, file drawers, liftup doors (and the little door in the corner) unify the design and add a touch of flair to the space.

This Murphy Bed project is one of 5 areas in the same North Toronto home that were recently custom designed and installed by Space Solutions, and we’ll be sharing more from this shoot with you soon. Photographs by Aaron Mason.

5 custom storage projects to inspire you in 2016

How are you going to get organized in 2016? Maybe it’s time to overhaul your closet with a custom closet design, or you’re ready to tackle the family room with custom cabinets, or maybe this is the year you get your home office fully organized and set up to take that next step. Space Solutions offers solutions for these and other spaces throughout your home with custom cabinetry in endless finish options. You’re ready to take that next step – here are 5 projects from our Houzz listing to inspire you, and get you on your way to clearing your New Year’s resolutions.

A contemporary home office

This installation showcases an L-shaped home office scenario, with included wire management channels room for two work stations. The laminates used on the custom cabinets are white “super matte” (an exciting, ultra-smooth finish, available in a variety of solid colours) and southwester woodgrain melamine. Drawers feature lateral file runners, for both legal and letter sized files. We also installed high-intensity LED strip lighting, embedded in the underside of the upper cabinets on both sides.

Custom closets

Even a simple reachin closet, done right, is an elegant effective solution to get you started on the right foot in 2016. Custom design allows us to design a custom closet that suits your needs, your space, your taste and your budget.

A custom Murphy bed

This side-tilt double Murphy bed uses chrome pulls and a beautiful melamine finish called “Linen”. The overhead and adjacent storage is stepped back, with the top-most levels all sitting just a little proud, creating a nice, simple detail. We also built a small desk area to the left of the bed, complete with over head storage and drawers. We can build our Murphy beds using a wide range of styles and finishes, and complement them with fully custom cabinetry around them, making your spare bedroom a home office, family room, library or more.

A wall unit with a fireplace

This project offers a bit of everything: wardrobes, drawer and laundry storage, a space for the TV and even a wall-mounted electric fireplace. When working with fireplaces you supply your own, and we build the cabinet to suit. Modern flat-panel fireplaces, just like flat-screen televisions, lend themselves nicely towards working with custom cabinets in any room.

A traditional library

This den was outfitted with luxurious stained wood to create a beautiful and functional library. The ultimate in custom cabinetry, featuring traditional five-piece solid wood on doors and drawer fronts, and real wood (maple) veneer on shelves and side panels, Space Solutions will have your custom den, home office, wall unit or library stained to suit and beautifully finished.

Complete Toronto Master Bedroom Project

Antique White master bedroomHere we would like to share this complete master bedroom project. This midtown Toronto home, where space as you can imagine is at a premium, needed a complete solution for living and storage space. And while often a Murphy Bed is the right solution, in this case our client desired a traditional bed, and had just enough space to make that work. By tailoring the design and application to meet their needs we were able to deliver a solution for them which could very well serve as inspiration for your complete master bedroom.

The first thing of note is that we actually built a platform for the bed itself, including integrated storage below, in the form of functional drawer space. Each side of the bed offers two deep drawers for storage including space for spare bedding. As you see in the detail images below (click to open them enlarged in a new window) the drawers may be opened without getting in the way of the bedding itself. By installing these drawers without handles – the fronts are oversized so you may easily pull them open from below – we avoid creating a hazard for tripping or snags.

On the window side of the master bedroom, there was a radiator along the wall. To deal with that we installed a radiator cover cabinet (sometimes simply called a ‘rad cover’). We used the same antique white laminate for the structure and door frames as for the rest of the installation, and the client selected an MDF screen which we had painted to match the laminate. The radiator itself did not run the entire length of the room, but for symmetry we installed the screening panels as if they did, and behind some of the doors there is additional storage, while the remainder allow the heat to radiate, and also open for any maintenance and access. The surface below the window neatly abuts the cabinets on the right end – where we provided some wardrobe and drawer storage.

Antique white master bedroomThe dark counter top used on either side of the bed – a popular woodgrain melamine tone called chocolate pear – creates unified night table space, and on the far side of the room, adjacent to the mirrored wardrobes, extends into a vanity area complete with its own mirrored backing. We also installed LED lights on three separate switches (which are stored inside the drawers on the relevant sides) to create display lighting for the upper glass cabinets, as well as reading lighting for either side of the bed. The LEDs blend nicely with the overhead lighting installed in the room itself. You can see detailed closeups below of the oil-rubbed bronze hardware used for the wardrobe doors (handles to match the knobs used on drawers) along with a pullout wardrobe rail used in this installation. The complete master bedroom project was designed, built and installed by Space Solution using antique white and chocolate pear finishes, with integrated mouldings, crown and other trimming details. The Murphy Bed in a multi-purpose family room

Wall Bed Rosedale midtown Murphy BedWe’ve posted previously about work done at this home, but hadn’t yet showcased the Murphy Bed in the lower level family room. While often times a Murphy Bed will be used in a small bedroom in order to be able to reclaim space during the day, Murphy Beds are most commonly installed in a room that serves a variety of purposes, like a home office, a den, or in this case, the family room. The lower level of this home looks out on the back yard and its patio and pool, and features a long wall of floor-to-ceiling windows. The client wanted something dynamic for this space, something that would catch the available light and stand out, yet not distract from the wall-mounted television he was providing, and chose a laminate called Stainless. This finish is available in the various laminate forms we use in our cabinet construction, and resembles brushed stainless steel when viewed up close. We used melamine for the flat surfaces, and a thermofoil version for the raised panel doors. The use of the shaker profile with Stainless was a bold choice, and really brought this Murphy Bed to life.

Wall Bed Rosedale midtown Murphy BedThe room in which we installed this wall unit and Murphy Bed has a lot of features for its daily use that aren’t seen in these shots; a bar, a pool table and of course a couple of comfortable loungers for watching the big game on television – you might even call it a bit of a “man cave”.  And while that’s certainly the main use of the space, there are times when you may have guests coming for extended stays, and that’s where including a Murphy Bed is ideal. Our Murphy Beds use genuine Murphy hardware, with its patented spring-loaded mechanism, which ensures safe, smooth and easy operation and carries a lifetime warranty against failures. The best part is that a genuine Murphy Bed uses actual, standard mattresses so you or your guests will be as comfortable as though they were sleeping in a regular bed. We use different combinations of springs during the installation to perfectly balance the hardware for the weight of your mattress – it’s so easy to open and close that anyone can use your Murphy Bed confidently and safely.

Other features of this multi-purpose Murphy Bed installation include a wardrobe on the lefthand side, L-shaped shelves that wrap the corner, overhead doors that lift up for bedding storage, 1 1/2″ trims and lips on the open shelves to create a more robust look, a buildup around the vent pipe on the righthand side (which was duplicated to the left of the television for symmetry) and a false door on the lower right containing a vent grill for the air circulation. All in all, this is one of the more unique Murphy Beds we have installed in the past couple of years. There are some additional angles of the finished product below, and if you would like to get started on your Murphy Bed project, you can request an in-home consultation by filling out this handy form.
