A statement-making wall unit in a Toronto waterfront condo

The striking custom cabinet is both eye-catching and an effective use of the limited space available in a Toronto condo. Nestled snugly between the air return on the left and the electrical / thermostat on the right, this design uses space efficiently and with its varied depth, the upper section does not overwhelm the room. Two-tone designs continue to set the trend, and here we have combined a woodgrain melamine finish called Sand Molina Ash with factory-painted white doors for a beautiful look. The uppers on this custom built-in wall unit feature touch-latch hardware on doors that are arranged in a playful, asymmetrical pattern, which really brings the structure to life.

Tucked underneath the seating area, for which the client supplied a complimentary cushion and padded back, are three pullout drawers, which feature handle-less touch-latch operation, like the doors above, so that there is nothing to get snagged on. We built this wall unit to the ceiling, and the fills across the top mimic the kicks across the bottom, for a complete, custom-fitted installation.

Setting the handles on the outsides allows for easy access to the storage behind the tall doors

Any custom built-in wall unit requires creative thinking. A great example on this project is the application of the tall doors on the sides. Most of the time, the dining table and chairs will be positioned closely in front of the custom cabinet, and maintaining access to the storage within is important. Usually, for the sake of the look the rule is to place handles towards the center of a custom wall unit, but doing that would have made access to the interiors awkward, as the hinges would have been positioned on the outsides, and the doors would swing towards you. So instead, we flipped that – by placing the handles on the outer edges, the hinges are now closer to the center, making it easier to open the doors and reach inside when the furniture is in place.

Great Wall Media Center Custom Cabinet

Custom cabinets are what we do – whether that’s in a closet or any other part of the home. We make custom cabinets for all of your storage needs, pills and they are tailor made for your space and tastes. This recent multi-purpose solution features a variety of finishes and solves multiple needs, website and is a great example of how a custom cabinet can serve multiple goals.

Family room built-in with desk surface, book storage and media center.

The recent trend in custom cabinets has been to use more than one finish, most often a two-tone approach. This project, however, involves four different finishes, and while that could get busy, our designer Paulina put together a combination that is subtle and effective. The main finish used here for the structure of this custom cabinet is a dark gray called Anthracite, in a soft-to-the-touch finish known as Supermat, which is rapidly gaining in popularity. In this case it serves as the foundation of the design, used for the carcass of the custom cabinet itself, as well as the open shelving and desk surface on the left, which is creatively angled in front of the job in the wall. Anthracite nicely balances against the soft, lighter gray tone of the client’s walls.

Sliding door panels part to reveal a TV.

This built-in wall unit serves also as a media center, and the center of the cabinet is faced with sliding door panels in a woodgrain melamine called River Rock. The tracks for the sliding door panels are embedded in the Anthracite structure, and (being made of aluminum) nicely blend into the dark gray. The upper (lift-up) and lower (hinged) doors on this custom cabinetry use high-gloss White laminate, which nicely reflects light from the adjacent window. The fourth finish at work here is the factory-painted accent shelf that spans the wall near the top, including bridging above the “floating” side bookshelf cabinet. In this case, a Benjamin Moore finish called Spa Day was used – our painter works with any colour provided in a variety of sheens, and sprays a gorgeous, even finish.

Here’s what the sliding doors on this custom cabinet look like “in action”:

The Custom Master Bedroom Walk In Closet

Custom closets have long been the foundation of our business, stomach and for good reason – storage is more and more at a premium in every house and condo in Toronto these days. We build custom cabinets for storage in every space in the home, approved and closets are no exception. Even a relatively simple closet organizer will likely feature a custom cabinet of some sort, as every solution we design and install is custom-fitted for your space and your needs. The custom master bedroom walk in closet featured in this post is a great example of the various features you may employ to truly get the most out of your closet.

Custom walk-in closet in white with shaker-style fronts

This custom walk in closet shows how to handle a narrow yet long closet space. By placing all the clothes hanging along one wall, valuable walking space down the center of the closet is maintained, making access a cinch. Shelf and drawer space doesn’t require as much depth and clothes hanging, which is why this works so well. At the entrance to this space, to the left, a shallower tower of shoe shelves was installed, both providing easy access for shoes as well as easing the entry to the closet.

shoe shelves, shoe storage, shaker drawers

Shoe shelving on either side of drawer towers makes for an interesting use of space

An interesting detail about this walk-in closet is that its entrance isn’t closed off from the bedroom with a door – instead, the passageway, adjacent to a window, is left exposed to better light the space. At the exposed end, we designed and installed a custom wardrobe cabinet, keeping the most easily-seen parts of the closet extra neat and tidy.

A custom wardrobe within a closet offers additional order and keeps things elegant and tidy.

Keeping the walking space down the center of the walk-in closet clear not only makes access simple, it also helps bring extra light into the space. No dark corners here! A clearance of two feet wide down the middle is a good minimum; the three feet of space achieved here is even better. And there is still ample clothes hanging space along that one long wall – 18 feet of space for shorter clothes hanging (shirts, folded pants, skirts) and another 3 feet of long hanging space (dresses, gowns, pants hung long by the cuff), plus the wardrobe space.

A Murphy Bed with an eye for design

A perfect custom Murphy Bed should blend into its surroundings so that the room is transformed smoothly into a multi-function space. Murphy Beds will most often be part of a custom cabinet scenario that includes additional storage, viagra order but can also be used in conjunction with a desk in a home office, a wardrobe in a spare bedroom, a media / game center in a family room or toy storage in a child’s play area. In this case, it’s a home office; a desk runs underneath the window and there is more than enough room for a Murphy Bed on the adjacent wall.

Double Side Tilt Murphy Bed in Sand and Southwester with stained wood desktop

This Murphy Bed design features a newly popular woodgrain melamine finish called Southwester, which has been getting a lot of use lately on our projects; it has elements of gray mixed in with the brown wood hues and conveys a natural, almost rustic look which really pops in a variety of projects. Here it serves as the foundation in this custom Murphy Bed, used as the trim, open shelving, back panels and fronts for the drawers under the desk top. Playing with the direction of the grain (subject to size and orientation of the piece) allows for some creative usage; on the backpanels the Southwester grain runs vertically, but on the drawer faces it runs horizontally.

wall bed

Double Side Tilt Murphy Bed in Sand and Southwester showing angled headboard

Two-tone combinations have long been popular on any type of custom cabinet installation, including wall units, wardrobes and entertainment centers, but traditionally the contrasting finish has often been white. In this Murphy Bed design, a supermat laminate called Sand Beige was selected. Supermat is a type of finish that is ultra smooth, and matte; it doesn’t have a gloss sheen to it, or even a typical melamine texture to it, it’s that smooth. Here it is used to great effect, as the door panel on the Murphy Bed itself, the overhead flip-up doors (concealing bedding storage) and the lower door and file drawers on the desk side. Using Sand Beige with Southwester here brings out the warmer tones in this layout and brightens the space, will keeping it soft and subtle. Supermat laminates are available in a variety of colours, and we have samples at our showroom – you’ll want to feel them for yourself!

custom cabinetry

Upper detail around Murphy Bed, showing varying grain direction, depths and top cap treatment

Anytime we are installing custom cabinets around a corner or window (or both, as in this case) this gives us an opportunity to creatively solve a problem or how to bring materials together and keep the flow continuous. Sometimes walls aren’t straight, angles may not be perfect and at the end of the day the solution needs to make sense functionally as well as structurally – it has to go together somehow. Here we elected to have the shelving next to the Murphy Bed step back twice, with the deepest shelving directly over the bed, and the shallowest – display depth – in the corner facing the side of the desk, overhanging a recessed backer. This stepping feature is also mimicked across the top where we have provided cap shelves to fill the space at the ceiling, with a simple yet elegant detail as those pieces sit proud. The vertical trim next to the shallowest shelf area tucks in neatly behind the window frame.

computer desk, work station

File drawers (left) and pencil drawers (right) sit underneath the stained wood desktop

For the desk surface itself we used solid wood, and had it stained to compliment the flooring in this space. Under the desk at the seating area we provided a pair of pencil drawers, and on the lower left, in easy reach from a seated position, a pair of drawers for hanging files. While it is unlikely you would be sitting at that desk while the Murphy Bed is in use, there’s just enough space in this arrangement to do so if you wish. Contemporary brushed chrome handles on the Murphy Bed, file drawers, liftup doors (and the little door in the corner) unify the design and add a touch of flair to the space.

This Murphy Bed project is one of 5 areas in the same North Toronto home that were recently custom designed and installed by Space Solutions, and we’ll be sharing more from this shoot with you soon. Photographs by Aaron Mason.

5 custom storage projects to inspire you in 2016

Sometimes we may over-emphasize the elaborate, viagra pills showpiece closets that we do. After all, search this they often make for the most interesting images. But that doesn’t mean that we only do these dressing room spaces. Not every home has a walk in closet, let alone one that has room for an island, and not every project requires all of the available decorative add-ons, like crown molding, baseboard, sculpted edges, glass and so on. So today we wanted to show you some simpler spaces we’ve done, and maybe you’ll see a concept that’s right for you.

Toronto Master Reach In Closet Chocolate Pear melamineHere is a double reach in closet in a master bedroom. We call it a “reach in”, of course, because as opposed to a walk in closet, you simply step and reach into it! For this space we used a very popular melamine finish called Chocolate Pear – one of the most popular dark finishes, as it tends to be available in all the various materials we use for cabinet construction (melamine, thermo, formica/arborite, etc) – and created a space within that has useful access from both doorways. As you’ll see in the next image, this closet is completely open inside, there is no dividing wall between the door openings.

Toronto Master Reach In Closet Chocolate Pear melamine angleWithout a barrier to divide the closet, the layout becomes more flexible. We set up the left side of the closet with double hanging of short clothes – always the biggest part of any closet renovation is freeing up the “real estate” by doubling up closet rods and opening up the length – and the right hand side of the closet is a split with a tower of shelves for folded clothes, handbags, shoes, etc, and some space for hanging long clothes. Remember that long hanging does not mean just dresses – oversized shirts and suit jackets typically need more vertical space than other short items, and if you prefer to hang your pants long by the pant cuff, they too will need more vertical clearance than shirts and blouses.

Master Walk In Closet Chocolate Pear melamineHere’s an example of a fairly straightforward Walk In closet – which, yes, you can walk into. You’ll see a lot of images on our site showing what we may call a Dream Closet, which typically will feature a lot of decorative detail that while enhancing the appearance don’t serve a functional purpose, and in some cases, may compromise the use of space. We know as well as you do that every inch counts when it comes to your storage needs and your closet, so unless you have a particular look in mind, you don’t need to go to that extent. What we are presenting here is a fairly common layout: clothes hanging down the sides, combining double short hanging with long hanging, with a shelf and drawer tower at the back of the space. Just as in the reach in closet shown above, the tower doesn’t have a back panel, and the wall itself acts as a back for the shelves. Closet rods are suspended between walls and gables, and hang traditionally above the floor. In some cases, you may prefer to use that same space for a full length mirror, and place shelf and drawer tower(s) on the other walls – it all depends on your needs and your space!

Bedroom Reach In Closet White melamineThis is a very common set up for a small, reach in closet. If the bedroom has adequate space, placing a chest of drawers in the room is fine, and trying to shoehorn drawers into a narrow closet such as this one isn’t always practical. Instead, a narrow bank of shelves can still accommodate plenty, whether it’s folded shirts, pants and/or sweaters, or even smaller items like socks in baskets on shelves. If you look closely, you’ll see that we’ve recessed the upper shelf in this closet – in other words, the shelf tower itself is a good depth for storing folded adults’ clothes – 16″ makes a good depth for that – but we’ve made the top shelf shallower, at 12″, seeing as it is at the height of the doorway, in order to provide decent access to it. Again we’re showing a combination of double and long hanging for clothes – and how that is split or not is entirely up to you. Don’t need to hang a lot, such as for a guest closet? We can simply do a single rod for whatever needs to be hung. Don’t have anything long to hang? We can double hang the entire hanging area in your closet. Even simple arrangements such as this one are unique, custom projects – we don’t mass produce or use pre-fab materials, and every closet is custom-designed in consultation with you, installed by one of our porfessional installers, and backed by our guarantee.

So isn’t time to get started? Visit our showroom to see full examples of our custom closet organizers, or use this handy form to request an in-home consultation! One of our designers will visit you at home, take measurements, go through color options and portfolio examples, and talk to you about who is using each closet and what their needs are like, so we can design a custom closet solution for your space that not only looks how you’d like it to look, but does what you need it to do. Drawer fronts feature a modified Shaker-style front with crystal knobs for added elegance. Adjustable shelves have an ogee edge detail and are located in groupings of holes to minimize visual distraction yet still provide flexibility, and all vertical panels are finished with decorative flutes that match the drawer fronts. With a crown up top and a decorative base, this closet is detailed from top to bottom. Shoes are stored on angled shelves using brushed chrome fences to hold shoes in place. In the picture to the left you can see we also left access to the drop down hatch that leads to the attic – you never know when you’ll need to get in there!

The upper “drawer face” in this case drops down on hinges and reveals a collapsible ironing board. The board is hinged and folded for storage behind the false drawer front – you pull it forward, unfold it and employ the support on its underside to stiffen it, and rotate it to the position that is most convenient to you. Condo Home Office Toronto High Gloss White Laminate wardrobeWe all know that condo living has its advantages and disadvantages, illness and one of the latter can be space. Fortunately, more about Space Solutions has been dealing with small and unusual spaces for 27 years now, unhealthy and our expertise and custom design really got a workout on this recent project. The home office shown to the left is situated in a condo between its entrance and an open kitchen. On the immediate left of the cabinetry is the original entrance closet – that closet is half-occupied by the stacked washer and dryer, with the remaining half being used for storage of cleaning products and linens. After replacing the standard builder-grade mirrored doors with our own aluminum-framed white lami glass doors, we needed to create a new closet wardrobe for the entrance. The tall cabinet section in this photo shows the wardrobe that we built, complete with drawers below. We used high-gloss white laminate for all exteriors, to match the facing of the kitchen cabinets, which are opposite this unit. The light source atop the cabinets is something we provided, we used LED strip lighting across the wardrobe top, facing the ceiling, to provide some ambient lighting for that corner, as the overhead fixture is a bit distant. Along the adjacent wall, we built a desk, which includes file drawers down below, and an overhead cabinet with lift-up doors. All doors and drawers on the wardrobe and cabinets feature touch-latch hardware (press the door or drawer lightly and it pops open) avoiding handles or knobs, and preserving the clean lines of the design.

The bedroom presented another challenge. There were two narrow closets on either side of the entrance to the en suite bathroom. Each was again covered with a pair of very narrow, builder-grade sliding mirrored doors. We wanted to increase the access to the wardrobes, and at the same time increase their usefulness, without affecting access to the bathroom in between. The solution: our top-hung bypass doors. Using the same door profiles and glass as our regular sliding doors, we use their top-hung hardware to create a single large panel for each closet, which slides completely to the side, in front of the bathroom door, to reveal the entire left or right closet. The top hang feature means that there is no floor track in front of the entrance to the bathroom, so you don’t have to steop over it each time you enter and exit. And while it is unlikely that one would need closet access while the bathroom is in use, on the off chance that happens, the doors have the same grip on front of back so they may be opened and closed from either side.

condo sliding doors white lami aventura Toronto - closed   condo sliding doors white lami aventura Toronto - right

In the second bedroom there was another small closet. In this case, we used our regular version of our sliding doors, and again replaced the existing mirrored doors. For the interior, we did something that we also did in the left hand closet of the master closet above, and built our drawers extra deep to get the most capacity out of them, but left the shelves shallower in order to make them more useful higher up. In both closets, we made the drawers with scooped fronts to again avoid handles – in this case, it was to ensure they did not interfere with the sliding doors.

We also recorded some video clips of this project, and will be sharing them soon!

Complete Toronto Master Bedroom Project

This midtown Toronto home, where space as you can imagine is at a premium, needed a complete solution for living and storage space. And while often a Murphy Bed is the right solution, in this case our client desired a traditional bed, and had just enough space to make that work. By tailoring the design and application to meet their needs we were able to deliver a solution for them which could very well serve as inspiration for your complete master bedroom.

The first thing of note is that we actually built a platform for the bed itself, including integrated storage below, in the form of functional drawer space. Each side of the bed offers two deep drawers for storage including space for spare bedding. As you see in the detail images below (click to open them enlarged in a new window) the drawers may be opened without getting in the way of the bedding itself. By installing these drawers without handles – the fronts are oversized so you may easily pull them open from below – we avoid creating a hazard for tripping or snags.

On the window side of the master bedroom, there was a radiator along the wall. To deal with that we installed a radiator cover cabinet (sometimes simply called a ‘rad cover’). We used the same antique white laminate for the structure and door frames as for the rest of the installation, and the client selected an MDF screen which we had painted to match the laminate. The radiator itself did not run the entire length of the room, but for symmetry we installed the screening panels as if they did, and behind some of the doors there is additional storage, while the remainder allow the heat to radiate, and also open for any maintenance and access. The surface below the window neatly abuts the cabinets on the right end – where we provided some wardrobe and drawer storage.

Antique white master bedroomThe dark counter top used on either side of the bed – a popular woodgrain melamine tone called chocolate pear – creates unified night table space, and on the far side of the room, adjacent to the mirrored wardrobes, extends into a vanity area complete with its own mirrored backing. We also installed LED lights on three separate switches (which are stored inside the drawers on the relevant sides) to create display lighting for the upper glass cabinets, as well as reading lighting for either side of the bed. The LEDs blend nicely with the overhead lighting installed in the room itself. You can see detailed closeups below of the oil-rubbed bronze hardware used for the wardrobe doors (handles to match the knobs used on drawers) along with a pullout wardrobe rail used in this installation. The complete master bedroom project was designed, built and installed by Space Solution using antique white and chocolate pear finishes, with integrated mouldings, crown and other trimming details. The Murphy Bed in a multi-purpose family room

page including media center and L-shaped library shelving” src=”http://www.spacesolutions.ca/spacesolutionsweblog/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Toronto-Murphy-Bed-Queen-Stainless-closed-wall-unit-family-room-full-300×200.jpg” alt=”Wall Bed Rosedale midtown” width=”240″ height=”160″ align=”left” hspace=”10″ vspace=”10″ />We’ve posted a couple of times previously about work done at this home, click but hadn’t yet showcased the Murphy Bed in the lower level family room. While often times a Murphy Bed will be used in a small bedroom in order to be able to reclaim space during the day, Murphy Beds are most commonly installed in a room that serves a variety of purposes, like a home office, a den, or in this case, the family room. The lower level of this home looks out on the back yard and its patio and pool, and features a long wall of floor-to-ceiling windows. The client wanted something dynamic for this space, something that would catch the available light and stand out, yet not distract from the wall-mounted television he was providing, and chose a laminate called Stainless. This finish is available in the various laminate forms we use in our cabinet construction, and resembles brushed stainless steel when viewed up close. We used melamine for the flat surfaces, and a thermofoil version for the raised panel doors. The use of the shaker profile with Stainless was a bold choice, and really brought this Murphy Bed to life.

Wall Bed Rosedale midtownThe room in which we installed this wall unit and Murphy Bed has a lot of features for its daily use that aren’t seen in these shots; a bar, a pool table and of course a couple of comfortable loungers for watching the big game on television – you might even call it a bit of a “man cave”.  And while that’s certainly the main use of the space, there are times when you may have guests coming for extended stays, and that’s where including a Murphy Bed is ideal. Our Murphy Beds use genuine Murphy hardware, with its patented spring-loaded mechanism, which ensures safe, smooth and easy operation and carries a lifetime warranty against failures. The best part is that a genuine Murphy Bed uses actual, standard mattresses (you provide your own) so you or your guests will be as comfortable as though they were sleeping in a regular bed. We use different combinations of springs during the installation to perfectly balance the hardware for the weight of your mattress – it’s so easy to open and close that anyone can use your Murphy Bed confidently and safely.

Other features of this multi-purpose Murphy Bed installation include a wardrobe on the lefthand side, L-shaped shelves that wrap the corner, overhead doors that lift up for bedding storage, 1 1/2″ trims and lips on the open shelves to create a more robust look, a buildup around the vent pipe on the righthand side (which was duplicated to the left of the television for symmetry) and a false door on the lower right containing a vent grill for the air circulation. All in all, this is one of the more unique Murphy Beds we have installed in the past couple of years. There are some additional angles of the finished product below, and if you would like to get started on your Murphy Bed project, you can request an in-home consultation by filling out this handy form.

The Spare Room Murphy Bed

ampoule with adjacent desk and book storage.” src=”http://www.spacesolutions.ca/spacesolutionsweblog/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Toronto-Murphy-Bed-double-side-tilt-custom-cabinet-desk2.jpg” alt=”wall bed, toronto” width=”500″ height=”391″ style=”PADDING-TOP: 10px”/> When folded away, a Murphy bed frees up precious floor space.

Murphy Beds, also known as wall beds, are an idea that’s been around for over 100 years, but we build Murphy Beds that are modern and exciting. It’s become quite common for us to be installing Murphy Beds in small condos, possibly in a spare bedroom or a den, or in basements in a home where every inch counts. But a Murphy Bed is an ideal solution for any space that may not need to always function as a bedroom, or when you want to maintain as much available space as possible. Here’s an example of a Murphy Bed we installed in a new home built in central Toronto. This was a fairly spacious three-bedroom house, and this room was the smallest of the 3 bedrooms, set up for a teenager. Rather than use a standard bed in the middle of the floor, they opted for a double side-tilt Murphy Bed, surrounded by a desk and book storage. The desk, next to the window, features a pair of pencil drawers below the surface, and open shelving above, and we added open cubbies above the Murphy Bed and a short book tower on the right side. We employed a lot of little size variances in this structure to keep it all very interesting, and to keep the Murphy Bed from dominating this small room. The top-most surfaces above the desk, cubbies, Murphy Bed and bookshelf all sit a little proud – that is, they protrude just slightly beyond the structures below, creating a shadow line effect. The bookshelf is also set back slightly in depth, as a 16″ deep tower – the standard depth for a Murphy Bed cabinet – is deeper than necessary for books, and reducing the depth also makes the cabinet more interesting, and allows it to visually recede in the space.

A double side tilt Murphy bed is a compact solution for a small room.

For this space we installed a side-tilt Murphy Bed. Side-tilts are often done in spaces that either have a height restriction, or perhaps the location of the bed is dictated by a feature of the room, and you might not be able to have it open the traditional way without conflicting with something. In this case, however, we both had ample height, and the room was long enough that we could have had the Murphy Bed oriented in the standard way, but we went with a side-tilt anyway. We decided that a vertical orientation was going to “loom” in this small room, and besides, the ability to offer storage above the Murphy Bed, and continue the “stepping down” effect of the structure was desirable, too. Behind the bed, you can see the angled headboard which, even though the mattress is on its side, still provides a stable feature that helps strengthen the structure across that wide span, and helps close the gap so one doesn’t lose things behind the bed. The entire structure was built using standard 3/4″ melamine board in a finish called Sheer Linen, a laminate with a beige hue that features a pattern resembling the cross-hatching of a woven fabric. In an industry that is dominated by woodgrain patterns, a finish like this really stands out and brings a nice touch to any project. (Note that in the weblink above, the color online presents more gray than it really is. Always view an actual sample when making your purchasing decision!)

A double Murphy Bed, whether oriented vertically or horizontally, still offers ample room for a single person or even a couple, and as with all Murphy Beds, you’re using a real mattress – maximum thickness of 10″. That maximum of 10″ allows the crossbar that links the feet to rotate up and over the mattress when you close the cabinet. We use only genuine Murphy Bed hardware for all of our Murphy Bed installations. The spring-loaded mechanism is warrantied by the manufacturer, and all of our installations carry are guaranteed for the lifetime of you owning them.We have two Murphy Beds on display in our showroom for you to try out and get started on your next project today!

Storage solutions for a modern Toronto condo

Today we’d like to do a walk-through of a project we did in a modern Toronto condo, website with solutions in a variety of areas. You’ll see different looks and styles for different rooms, see that in the end all work together to create space that is elegant and practical, find and perhaps you’ll find some inspiration for your own home.

custom bedroom storage

The main showpiece in this condo was this bedroom piece. You know of course that Space Solutions makes Murphy Beds, but we also will create solutions that go around an existing bed. In this case, the clients had a wonderful bed already, and the task was to create a storage solution that went around it and worked with it, what is sometimes known as a bed surround. Our designer, Christopher, came up with a concept that looks great, and provides both a useful storage solution as well as a live and work space. To the left of the bed, we built a tall, narrow cabinet for enclosed storage, and the base of it protrudes and acts as a night table, so there’s a convenient space for a book, an alarm clock, a cell phone, etc. On the right-hand side, a desk was created for a work space, open at the bottom for legroom, and with convenient cubby hole storage directly above it. Across the top, and bridging the two sides, we built a creative series of open and enclosed storage, for display and easy-to-get-to areas, as well as concealed storage for things you may not want left out in the open, such as extra bedding behind the wide upper door.

Keeping things bright and light, we built the bulk of the structure using white melamine – also used for the closet peeking through the door to the right – and added exterior trims and facing with a high-gloss white finish, a popular, modern touch. The framed glass doors may look like aluminum, but they’re actually board, framed using a thermo laminate called Stainless. The doors then had the same white lami glass we used for our sliding doors inserted for a great look. For hardware we used the ever-popular “towel bar” style of handle in stainless steel, and we added a pair of LED puck lights above the sleeping area to provide more light for reading in bed.

Cayenne maple wall unit condo Toronto bedroomIn addition to the work in the bedroom, we also installed a built-in in the den. This storage solution is a wall unit for general storage, and required some drawer storage as part of things, for smaller loose items that don’t stay as well on shelves. In order to preserve the clean, vertical lines of the doors, we placed the drawer behind them. The drawer boxes themselves are the same size as they otherwise would be, but without the addition of a face or extra handles. So on the outside, you see a series of doors with consistent handles, but inside, it varies. This cabinet was built using melamine in Cayenne Maple, with flat doors; you might have thought that a crown moulding doesn’t go with flat fronts, but as you can see here, it works quite nicely and finishes off the cabinet. Click on the thumbnails below to see interior views of the drawers.

china cabinetLastly, we also installed a simple built-in in the client’s dining room. This cabinet features a combination of solid doors for concealed storage as well as doors with clear glass inserts for display. Again, we added LED lighting to the cabinet for illuminating their display items, and further used glass for the shelves so that the light can pass through. This cabinet was built using a combination of melamine and thermo laminates in Chocolate Pear, with shaker-style solid doors. All three areas of the home feature different colors, different hardware and even different lines, but everything works in this condo. This was a new location for the client, but this approach also works nicely for you if you’re living in a house, and/or have lived there for many years.

Blending traditional design details with fresh, modern lines is always exciting and effective, and we can help you with that. It’s what we’ve been doing since 1986! To get started on your next home project, you can visit our showroom in The Sunnybrook Plaza, or use this handy form to request an in-home consultation – we’ll take the measurements and bring samples and portfolio to go through ideas with you, and in just a few weeks you can be enjoying your own custom storage solution.

A Playful Child’s Mudroom

While not a mudroom per se, we did set up a couple of storage spaces with structures that are very similar to what we would use in a mudroom, with a playful, children’s theme. Bright colours really bring this setup to life. The cabinet shown here provides overhead storage for the grownups, and down the back we sourced these great multi-colored hooks shaped like elephants – you can find them at Lee Valley Tools – for hanging hats. Note the cutout we made on the left-hand side of the cabinet to allow access for the lightswitch that lights the space concealed by the sliding door panels to the left. At the base of the structure, we added a seating area – another common feature in mudroom units – and added a single row of storage drawers, with open space below for shoes. By using the vertical dividers we have created a “locker” effect, such that each child may have their own defined area – no fighting over who’s on who’s side! The doors and drawer are accented with colourful, acrylic pulls shaped like tulips, also available from Lee Valley. The hardware brings a fun, funky element to these simple, white cabinets, and also goes hand-in-hand with the sliding doors we provided.

Toronto sliding doors room divder melamine white lami glass back-paintedWe also supplied and installed 2 sets of our sliding doors for this project. The first, smaller set, you can see a part of in the image above, which enclosed a closet. Here’s a second, larger set that we made. Both sets feature a variety of insert materials, and are a great example to show you the range of products we can use in our door program. As always, the hardware is made of aluminum, here in its natural appearance, and we used the Niagara profile for the sides. (Read this post for a comparison of the 2 profile options.) The solid, non-reflective material used for the bulk of the doors is white melamine. (There’s over a dozen melamine finishes available that may be used for our door line – we’ll be updating that colour selection soon, so check back for updates!) The large, bluish-gray panels seen here are white lami glass. White Lami is a translucent material that gives the appearance of frosted glass, without the etching or sand-blasting process that dulls the finish; it comprises 2 sheets of glass with a thin white film in between, providing privacy but allowing light to pass through. Lastly, those colourful panels? They’re back-painted glass, painted with colours selected to go with the hardware used on the cabinets. Select any colour from the paint deck of your choice, and our glass source will match it!

We have full-sized examples of our sliding doors, using a variety of insert materials including back-painted glass, on display in our showroom.
